Nine PODs Opening On Wednesday

There are still PODS distributing supplies in much needed areas. On Wednesday, a POD in Stafford will open at Southern Ice Cream Corporation.

In Galveston, PODs will open at the island community center and at Academy Sports.

Chambers County will open sic PODs. They will be at the Winnie Community Center, Anahuac High School, Barbers Hill Middle School, Hank-Amer Community Building, Wallisville Community Building, and Smith Point Volunteer Fire Department.

A+ Academy -- Closed all week, Sept. 15-19.
AAMA -- AAMA and all its programs, including the George I. Sanchez School, will remain closed while they assess readiness to re-open.
Alief ISD -- Teachers report on Monday. School opens on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Alief Baptist Academy -- Closed on Monday, Sept. 15.

Art Institute of Houston -- Closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 15-17.Normal classes resume Thursday,Sept. 18. Art League Houston -- Fall art classes will begin on Monday, Sept. 29, not Sept. 22.
Ascension Episcopal School -- Closed through Wednesday, Sept. 17. Will re-open on Thursday.
Avance Head Start Centers -- Set to re-open Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Awty International School -- Will be closed Monday, Sept. 22, through Wednesday, Sept. 24. Opening of the school is pending the restoration of power. The decision to reopen the school will be made on a day to day basis.
Barbers Hill ISD -- Barbers Hill Primary School and Barbers Hill Intermediate School will re-open on Monday, Sept. 29. All other Barbers Hill campuses will open on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Bay Area Charter Elementary -- School closed through Friday, Sept. 19.
Baylor College of Medicine -- Baylor College of Medicine opened on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Baylor College of Medicine graduate school classes resume on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Due to extensive damage to the Christa McAuliffe Middle School (CMMS) campus, those students will now attend classes at WHS, and should report to that campus (WHS) in the morning, Sept. 23, at their regular time. Texas Department of Criminal Justice -- Administrative offices and pre-service and in-service academies in areas impacted by Hurricane Ike will be closed on Monday, Sept. 15. Essential unit and other essential staff should report as scheduled.
Texas Department of Transportation -- Houston District Headquarters will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16, due to power outages. Only essential TxDOT personnel need to report to work at this location.
Texas Forest EXPO -- The EXPO was originally scheduled for Sept. 27-28 at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe, but has now been postponed. Plans to reschedule EXPO for Spring 2009 are underway.
Texas Home and Garden Show -- Originally scheduled for Sept. 19-21 at Reliant Stadium, but now has been rescheduled to Oct. 24-26.
Theatre Under The Stars -- Performances of The Color Purple” are canceled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 and Wednesday, Sept. 17.

UNICEF’s "Mystique of India" Gala -- The U.S. Fund for UNICEF Gulf Coast Regional Office announced they have made the decision to postpone their scheduled "Mystique of India" Gala that was to be held this Friday, Sept. 19 at the InterContinental Hotel Houston. UNICEF will announce the new date once it has been determined. The Auction highlight event, which was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 is postponed as well.
Waste Management -- Corporate offices at First City Tower and One City Center in downtown Houston will be closed on Monday, Sept. 15. Maintenance, custodial and grounds employees should report if possible.
Welcome Home Childcare in Channelview -- Open.
West Houston Medical Center -- Cancelling all elective, non-emergency surgeries on Monday, Sept. 15.
Woodsedge Community Church -- Open for all weekend services at The Woodlands, Montgomery and Tomball.

Who's Getting Power & When

More than 1.5 million Centerpoint Energy customers have had their electricity restored since Hurricane Ike knocked the power out for most of the upper Texas Coast last weekend.

In all, power has been restored to about 73 percent of CenterPoint customers. That leaves about 616,000 customers still in the dark.

The second largest provider is Entergy, which says it has restored power to about 92 percent of customers. Roughly 31,000 Entergy customers are waiting for their power to come back on.

Finally, Texas-New Mexico Power, which serves people in Galveston, Brazoria and Matagorda counties, says it has restored power to or 83 percent of its customers. More than 19,000 people remain without power.
